roller update with quirks - new look

i updated roller (from 2.3 to 4.0 !), crippling all 3 active blogs on this server *whistles*... the perfect chance to finally re-do this page ;-)
during the update, i noticed that my (ubuntu) mysql server has safe-updates on - although it's neither mentioned in
/etc/mysql/my.cnf
, nor in any
.my.cnf
, and it's not possible to disable this setting by putting
safe-updates = 0
into a
my.cnf
or issueing "
SET SQL_SAFE_UPDATES=0
". Veeery interesting. Safe updates are supposed to keep you from "accidentaly deleting all your data"... i hate it when software patronizes me. One more reason to dislike MySQL.. in favor of PostgreSQL, which *really* rocks. If only i had known this 3 years ago, when i set up roller 1.0 ... ;) This specific issue seems to be a problem with the mysql package in ubuntu, though. I googled for a solution other than rolling my own mysql package, but to no avail - i ended up cut & pasting the database update script contents line-by-line, suffixing every
UPDATE
line that didn't specify a key column with
LIMIT=10000000000
. I had to reduce downtime ;)
also, on a side note that's probably not going to affect anyone but me anyways, i had to manually add the "locale" column (varchar(20)) to the weblog (or was it website?) table, it was missing in some update script (i started out with roller 1.0! remember?)...
the theme you see now is an adopted "integral". i hope you like the new looks... skimming through the list on rollerthemes.com i doubt it will stay long, though ;)

i finally got to updating roller - big step from 1.0 to 2.0.

if you try it, don't forget to enable encrypted passwords in roller-custom.properties, otherwise your logins will fail silently, because unencrypted passwords seem to be the default now (or did i change it on first install? can't remember..)

the search function now works, i think it never did before.

keep having fun blogging!

hint: you also need to add /comment to the list of ajp13-related urls!
and if updating to 2.3-incubating, don't forget to add /CommentAuthenticatorServlet, too!..

i just updated the ssl certificate the quick-and-dirty way. i guess it's still only valid for another 30 days... am i right? nah. to lazy now. let's get that task back to me in 30 days, so i can keep it off my mind till then ;)

in other news, there will be the 5th Fading Dimensions LAN-Party in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany, Europe, 3rd Planet from 22nd to 24th of April, 2005, so be sure to reserve your seats now! Of course i will attend, but, of course, as techie staff member, not as a g4m0r (though i plan to play a bit this time, but i gets me bored so quickly ... )

i'll watch Andromeda now (Season 5 Episode 17 just arrived!).

By the way, does anyone of you know why almost all the series i watch take a break from beginning of march 'til mid-april? anything happening that time of the year in the U.S. ? The only series that continued was 24... Andromeda, Enterprise, even Gilmore Girls took a break, it seems. Input, please!

I just hacked htmlarea into this roller installation, and enabled HTTPS redirection.

htmlarea
is really nice, it offers a simple yet powerful html editing capability
that maps transparently to textarea-elements, using only javascript
code (version 3.0 betas work with mozilla, i wouldn't dare install it otherwise). i had to shuffle a few things around in roller to get it working, but no too much.

a table

you can even edit tables

and add
pictures if you like. There is also an aspell-based spell-checker that
uses a cgi in the background, but i didn't install that yet. Oh, and
multi-level undo...

but now for some real life stuff...

work was productive today, i finished quite a bunch of todos, my mood was accordingly good. a guy from my company's
hardware dealer mailed that the hardware i ordered would arrive within
the day - 512MB of extra RAM and a SATA-Controller for my athlon64
machine, two things i have been waiting to buy since christmas, so i
knew already that the weekend couldn't be all bad, as i would at least
have something to do (=waste time on). But the driver
didn't show up all day, and i ended up calling the hardware shop 2
times until i got the o.k. to fetch the stuff myself - i began thinking
that customer satisfaction is generally not a valued target of austrian
businesses. but when my boss (who kindly offered to drive me) and i
arrived, he was very sorry for that mistake and excused 5 times (we're a pretty good customer there...). So i got my hardware just in time... *phew*

i'm
not presenting this in correct chronological order, so i'll have to
back-reference now: a circumstance that my boss offered to drive me to
that shop was, that we sent off a lot of packages today, 66 to be
exact, and we had to get them to the post office. we carried in all the
packages, and the guy on duty started weighing them... all of them. one
after another - and entering the postal code into his peecee. there
sure is some need for process optimisation... of course the packages
all contained exactly the same, in fact, they were packaged in

bubble wrap!!!

so he could *see* that there's the same content in every package. well... maybe he would have been bored otherwise.

when
i finally was home, i instantly began installing the new hardware (of
course), and it all just worked(tm). i'm still moving data around, but
from what i can 'feel' now, the sata hard disk is much faster then the
onboard-udma133 one.

clifford was here, and he almost forgot that he had to moderate a radio show
today, so he left again pretty soon. he still was 25 minutes late, 2
other rock linux developers and me listened to the live stream (in
uber-ugly quality). afterwards clifford and his girlfriend came back
here and clifford created an extraordinary meal, with parts of dead
animals and all that.

and now i'm too drunk and much too tired
to keep on writing, besides, i'm curious how the 'result' of a
htmlarea-created entry will render on the final page.

follow-up the next morning: i completely forgot to mention the broken glasses
thing, just when i had a lot of fun hacking hatmlarea, my glasses
broke, one 'holder' broke off. great. no i run around like a total wuzz
again until i get time to have it fixed...
